Review | iPhone case from Stone Jelly

You spend hundreds of pounds on a smartphone and then you slap on a case made of plastic that cracks after a week, makes your phone look like everyone elses, gives you a rash, and makes Jonathan Ive cry. Stone Jelly is a company that make rather special iPhone and iPad cases. Their product was born out of a hatred for those tacky mass produced offerings that could now feasibly outnumber the amount of phones in existence. I’m not sure what market traders sold before they could sell Justin Bieber's face warped onto a piece of silicon? I guess useful things like oranges or miscellaneous bags of meat?

Fact: Did you know; that if you piled up every plastic phone case in the world on the beach in Rio - it would be a right mess. A real bloody mess.

Sharing the sentiment for terrible cases, I went on a search to find some jazzy protection for my new iPhone (incidentally my first ever iPhone) and eventually after literally maybe 4 or even 5 searches I found Stone Jelly (4 or 5 searches in ‘Google years’ is about 3 human days to give you some context).

The kind of case that The Hound from Game of Thrones would use to smash your face in if it was lying around. It’s that well made.

The case itself made to a high standard, with each being checked before being shipped out. Each one is constructed from a mix of wood and precision cut aluminium which is lined with cork to make sure your phone is all snug (and/or smug). Handmade out of choice cuts of timber, each case is a little different (like a snowflake or another slightly less shit analogy if you can think of one).

The case is what some have described as “a little bulbous” and yes, it is larger than your normal plastic sheath, but you soon get used to it. I’ve had my case for a couple of weeks now and I can’t imagine my phone without it (obviously I can imagine my phone without it - I’m not a complete vegetable - It’s just a saying). The feeling can only be compared to when you’ve been to the dentist and they’ve fixed your gnashers and it feels all weird for a bit but then you forget all about it and get on with your life safe in the knowledge things are just that little bit better (again, feel free to jump in with your own analogy).

The case has a hint of steampunk to it, although not so that it includes tiny bellows or a brass crank. I like to think the style leans more towards ‘that train from Back to the Future III’.
